    Fought in the Revolution with his father and his brothers, Joshua and Joel.


    From Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Boston, June 23rd, 1896. "Revolutionary Service of Asa Conkey":

    "Asa Conkey appears with rank of corporal on Muster and Pay Roll of Capt. John Thompson's Co. of Col. Leonard's Hampshire Co. Regt., marched to reinforce the Northern Army for 2 mos.
    Enlisted- May 7, 1777
    Discharged-July 8, 1777.
    Service-2mos. 10 days, 9 days travel included.
    Vol. 23-168
    Note: [This is the same company and the same date of enlistment as his father, James' first tour.]

    Lived in Pelham Mass until he moved with his family to Orwell in 1793.

    His sister, Miriam, was married to Roswell Bottum (cousin of Jesse?), another early prominent Orwell resident.

    In 1803, he moved to Canton, NY.

    Died of smallpox while in Plattsburgh, NY building a mill, as "he was a mechanic by trade" - from memo taken by GM Wright from Mrs. S.H. (Bottum) Dewey, Zilpha's sister-in-law. His gravesite is unknown.

    Joshua at 17 years of age was a drummer at Bennington; held a captain's commission in the War of 1812, was taken prisoner at Ogdensburg, and taken to Halifax. When set at liberty was sent by sea to Boston and walked from that city to Canton.

    pg 460 A short distance north of the NE corner of Parish's store was a rude wooden breastwork defended by an iron 12-pounder, which was mounted on a sled-carriage. It was also one of the trophies won from Burgoyne and was under the command of Capt. Joshua Conkey of Canton.
