Walter Scott Benton and Emma Prouse Benton
Funds to build the library were donated by Emma Prouse Benton as a memorial to her husband Walter Benton and by A. Barton Hepburn
He could possibly be the Walter Benton in this Rootsweb entry - family lived in Canton for some time:

The Canton Library has an excellent article on Walter Benton's life on their web site under Historical Scrapbooks from the Plaindealer dated Aug 4, 1908(use search to find it). It said his father was a carpenter, and they settled at Wallace Mill near the Brick Chapel. He started working in his father's mill at the age of 14, went to Potsdam Academy for a short time and then went West to Illinois, then to Chicago to work in a lumber yard. After this he spent 1 year in Missouri, drifted to Leavenworth Kansas and joined a party to go to Pikes Peak, Colorado with a portable saw mill. From there he moved to Helena, Montana where he built a saw mill and bought cattle. He came back east, married Emma Prouse from Heuvelton and then moved to Anamosa, Iowa where he bought another saw mill and built a little fortune. From there he moved to Minneapolis and invested in a Linseed Oil Company.
